October Sports Column
Sign-ups for winter sports are beginning, but that doesn’t mean that the fall sports are over just yet. Catalina’s cross-country team is sending four runners (Rosa Aguilar ‘18, Carolina Bishop ‘18, Kari Jonsson ‘18 and Raquel Rodriquez ‘18) to the MTAL Championships on November 2nd. In addition, water polo won their recent game against Notre Dame with a score of 13-6, landing them a spot in the CCS playoffs. Volleyball has won its second straight MTAL title after winning 49 consecutive games — 42 of which were sweeps. Tennis has been ranked among the top five teams in the league, according to the Monterey Herald. On October 20th, they celebrated three straight wins after a victory of 6-1 over Oakwood. As of October 22nd, golf ranked third place in their league, behind Stevenson and Carmel. Golf also competed in the League Championships on October 24th at Laguna Seca. On October 4th, field hockey went on to beat York in a close 1-0 game.
The closing of fall sports also means that some seniors will be making their final appearances on the court or field. Volleyball celebrated their Senior Night on the 23rd, congratulating Emma Roffler, Jenna Mann, Saige Madden, Olivia Satow, and McKinley Fox on their amazing careers. Water polo also had their Senior Night on the 17th, where they recognized Alyssa Kwon, Sarina Baratta, Madison Gong, Grace Young, and Ariana Fadel. Field hockey closed out their season on the 27th after a well-played season, thanking Marika Blacklock, Talia Varjian, Lulu Fang, Charlotte Gerzanics, and Zoe Griffith for their commitment to the sport. Tennis recently commemorated Rachel D’Agui, Katherine Kim, Molly Racich, Caroline Stewart, Samantha Do, Ava Garofano, and Maddie Oh. Meanwhile, golf bid farewell to Coco Chai, Tara Mann, and Lilly Sato. Senior Nights are bittersweet, but the players are always enthusiastic in showing their support and gratitude to the beloved senior members of the team. Now, as the fall sports play out their final few matches, students are beginning to look forward to the winter athletics season.
