Santa Catalina School offers a variety of various traditions throughout the year. One of the most popular and enjoyable is the annual Halloween dinner. The annual Halloween dinner occurs the week of Halloween after a traditional school day. Hosted by the freshman class, this responsibility allows incoming students to get a taste of what traditions look like at Santa Catalina. The freshman class works together after school to transform the dining room into a spooky, eerie environment where the student body will gather together to share dinner. This event is open to students, faculty, staff, and on-campus families. The night begins when students arrive in costume to have dinner, usually a student favorite meal of mac and cheese and chicken tenders served with mud pie for dessert. Afterward, it is up to the freshman class. Commonly, there are activities such as costume contests and karaoke. This year, some favorite costumes were prisoners, rappers, and a floating witch. These activities, as well as students catching up with their friends and teachers, take up the majority of the night. But after dinner, the senior class sets up their haunted house, appropriately named “haunted hills” because of its typical location in Hills Dormitory. Students rush to go through the haunted house and get a good scare from their fellow classmates. This year, because of the lack of room within Hills dorm, haunted hills were relocated to two conjoining classrooms. Nevertheless, the seniors still made it an amazing experience for the entire student body. Day students who do not traditionally participate in “haunted hills” set up their cars for trunk or treating, an activity where all students have the opportunity to socialize with their friends and trick or treat out of cars. Additionally, some resident faculty open their homes for students to trick or treat there as well. This fun-filled night is a favorite tradition at Santa Catalina School, it is a night that students and faculty alike look forward to, and this year, it was an undoubted success.
