Catalina’s fall musical is Godspell, and it opens on Friday, October 16th. So, what do you need to know before seeing this show?
Godspell was written by Stephen Schwartz and John Micheal-Telebak. It was originally a school project at Carnegie Mellon University before it was later produced off Broadway. The two creators were intrigued by ideas from Jesus Christ Superstar and the concept of Jesus Christ as the harlequin – or the “wise fool.” Released in 1971, it was Stephen Schwartz’ debut (he would later go on to create Wicked). When it came out, Godspell was an instant hit and was later turned into a movie (1973) and made its way onto Broadway in 1976. In general, the themes of “love thy neighbor” and “turn the other cheek” were especially well received amidst the turbulent 1970s. Additionally, production wise, it is a very seventies show. From the costumes and the songs, to the set and the themes – the entire show was geared towards the time. In 2011, Godspell was modernized for a revival on Broadway. Creators added modern day references and updated the music and stage directions. As for the storyline of the show, it follows a troupe of friends as they retell the parables from the Book of Matthew through a series of skits. Godspell balances comedic timing with poignant emotional moments to make these ancient stories accessible, vibrant, and enthralling. Additionally, in Catalina’s production there are a great deal of technical elements to look out for. The Lamplighter doesn’t want to give away any secrets; just know that it is an interactive and vivacious production.
There will be five showings of Godspell at the Sister Carlotta Performing Arts Center. The evening productions are on October 16th, 17th, and 24th, starting at 7:30 pm.
