Olivia Rodrigo, a singer and actress in Disney’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, has become an internet sensation in recent months because of her new music. Back in January, 2021, Rodrigo’s first single, “Drivers License,” broke numerous streaming records on Spotify, Amazon Music, and other music platforms. On Spotify, the song holds the record for the most streams in a single week. Thanks to the influence of video-sharing app TikTok, the song’s possible meaning and its heartbreaking story spread like wildfire. Many fans believe “Drivers Licence” is about a love triangle involving Rodrigo, her Disney co-star and ex-boyfriend Joshua Bassett, and Basset’s current girlfriend, Sabrina Carpenter. Through creative and brilliant lyrics, Rodrigo shared her feelings of nostalgia and loneliness, allowing others in similar situations to relate. Even those who were not in the same boat as Rodrigo played the song on repeat and created trends featuring its powerful melody. “Drivers License” entered Billboard’s Hot 100 at the top spot, and Rodrigo’s gratitude for her listeners did not go unnoticed.
