Have you ever watched High School Musical? Well, Disney is now making a new television series inspired by High School Musical. High School Musical: The Musical: The Series takes place where the original High School Musical movie was filmed, at East High in New Mexico. The series follows a group of students who put on a production of High School Musical after a new, upbeat drama teacher, named Miss Jenn, comes to East High. Miss Jenn arrives at East High angered that the school where High School Musical was filmed has never put on a production of the musical itself.
The first episode of the series aired on November 8th, on Disney Channel, ABC, and Freeform. High School Musical: The Musical: The Series also streams on the new Disney platform, Disney+.
Olivia Rodrigo, an actress who played Paige Olvera in Disney Channel’s Bizaardvark, is now an actor for High School Musical: The Musical: The Series playing Nini Salazar-Roberts. Nini is cast as Gabriella Montez in the High School Musical production after competing with a new exchange student, named Gina, for the part. Gina, who is played by actress and dancer Sofia Wylie, is ultimately cast as Taylor McKessie and is the understudy for Gabriella. Nini’s feminist friend, Kourtney, is played by actress Dara Reneé. Actor Joshua Bassett plays Ricky Bowen, Nini’s “skater-boy” ex-boyfriend who is cast as Troy Bolton in High School Musical. Big Red, another “skater-boy” played by actor Larry Saperstein, is Ricky’s supportive friend. E.J. Caswell, played by actor Matt Cornett, is Nini’s current boyfriend. He is cast as Chad Danforth and is the understudy for Troy. The peppy drama teacher, Miss Jenn, is played by actress Kate Reinders. Her drama assistant, Carlos, is played by actor Frankie Rodriguez.
The series is full of musical and dance performances with romantic and teen drama filled with sabotage, much like the original High School Musical. Be sure to watch the first episodes!
